What Informed Sport certification means

Informed Sport is a banned-substance testing programme run by LGC, the UK laboratory group that has tested sports supplements for anti-doping purposes for decades. A product carrying the Informed Sport logo has had every batch tested for substances on the WADA Prohibited List before it was released for sale. The screen covers several hundred compounds, including anabolic agents, stimulants, beta-2 agonists, diuretics and masking agents, using ISO 17025-accredited methods. Certification does not stop at launch: LGC also buys certified products from retail at random and re-tests them blind.

Every certified product and every tested batch is listed on a public database at sport.wetestyoutrust.com. That database is the certification. A logo on a pack is only meaningful if the product and batch appear there.

Informed Sport, Informed Choice and Informed Protein

LGC runs three related programmes and they are easy to confuse.

• Informed Sport: every batch is tested before release. This is the standard required by most professional clubs, governing bodies and drug-tested athletes.
• Informed Choice: the manufacturing facility is audited and the product is sampled from retail on a monthly blind schedule, at least twelve batches a year. The methods are the same as Informed Sport, but not every batch is tested, so a given batch you buy may not have been through the lab. It is a strong quality signal for general consumers and a weaker guarantee for tested athletes.
• Informed Protein: a different question entirely. It verifies that a protein product contains the protein it claims, by testing total nitrogen, free amino acids and nitrogen-rich adulterants. It says nothing about banned substances.

For an athlete who can be tested, the distinction that matters is batch-level testing. Informed Sport gives it; Informed Choice does not guarantee it.

Why drug-tested athletes need batch testing

Anti-doping operates on strict liability: the athlete is responsible for whatever is in their body, whether or not they knew. Supplement contamination is a recognised route to a positive test, usually through cross-contamination in a factory that also handles prohibited ingredients, or through undeclared ingredients in raw materials. A batch-tested product does not make a positive test impossible, but it gives the athlete an independent, dated screen for the exact batch they took, which is what governing bodies ask for when they assess a case.

Collagen and creatine are low-risk ingredients on paper: neither is prohibited or a stimulant. The risk is the facility, not the ingredient, which is why certification covers the finished product and its batch rather than the raw material.

How to check a batch number

1. Find the batch or lot number on the pack. It is usually printed near the best-before date, on the back or base of the box or on the sachet edge.
2. Go to sport.wetestyoutrust.com and open the certified supplement search. You can search by brand, product or batch number.
3. Enter the batch number. If the batch has been tested, it appears against the product with its test date.
4. Alternatively, use the Informed Sport mobile app, which lets you scan the barcode on the pack and then confirm the batch on the product page.
5. Keep the pack, or a photo of the batch number, for as long as you might be asked about it.

If the product appears but your batch does not, contact the brand before using it. Batches can take a few days to be added after testing.

UK collagen and creatine products with Informed Sport or Informed Choice certification

Verified 17 September 2026 (KUDU Collagen + Creatine status corrected 18 September) against listings on the Informed Sport and Informed Choice databases. We checked the brands most often asked about, so a brand missing here may simply not have been checked. Status can change and brands can withdraw, so confirm the batch you hold before relying on it.

Two notes from the check. Bulk is a certified brand under its bulk PRO range, but we could not find a collagen or creatine entry against it on the database; its standard creatine is not listed. Myprotein's certification covers the Elite range, not its standard Creatine Monohydrate. Absolute Collagen was in the Informed Sport programme until it withdrew voluntarily in December 2023, so older batches appear on the database but current ones are not tested.

Is Informed Sport the same as Informed Choice?

Is creatine banned in sport?

No. Creatine monohydrate is not on the WADA Prohibited List and is one of the most studied supplements in sport (Kreider 2017, Antonio 2021). The certification exists to guard against contamination of the finished product, not because creatine itself is a concern.

Does Informed Sport test collagen for anything other than banned substances?

How do I know my specific box was tested?

Search the batch number on sport.wetestyoutrust.com or scan the barcode in the Informed Sport app and confirm the batch on the product page. The logo alone is not proof; the database entry for your batch is.

Can I still get a positive test from a certified product?

The risk is very low but not zero. Batch testing screens for the compounds on LGC's list at the detection limits of the method. What it gives you is an independent, dated record for your batch, which is the evidence anti-doping bodies expect an athlete to have kept.
