Creatine for Hyrox: Does It Help the Stations, and How Should You Take It?

Two athletes sitting on a wall after a training session, holding KUDU bottles

Creatine can help with the short, brutal parts of Hyrox, such as heavy sled pushes, burpee broad jumps and wall balls, and with the strength and interval training that builds them. It will not make the 8km of running easier, and a small amount of water weight is the trade-off. Take 3–5g a day, start at least four weeks before race day, and skip the loading phase.

Hyrox is mostly an endurance race with strength stations stitched in, so creatine is a useful tool rather than a magic one. Below you will find a station-by-station map of where it is relevant, a countdown planner that tells you when to start for your race date, and the full method.

Quick answer

Yes, creatine can be worth taking for Hyrox, mainly for the sled, burpee and wall-ball stations and your strength training. Take 3–5g every day for at least four weeks before the race so your muscles are full, keep taking it through race week, and avoid a 20g-a-day loading phase close to the race, because the extra water weight is something you would carry for 8km. Creatine is not on the WADA Prohibited List.

Where creatine fits, and when to start

1. SkiErg1,000m · mostly aerobic
2. Sled push50m · repeated max efforts
3. Sled pull50m · repeated max efforts
4. Burpee broad jumps80m · repeated explosive
5. Row1,000m · mostly aerobic
6. Farmers carry200m · grip and strength-endurance
7. Sandbag lunges100m · strength-endurance
8. Wall balls100 reps · repeated power

Plum: repeated short, hard efforts, closest to what creatine's authorised claim describes. Sage: strength-endurance, some relevance. Grey: mostly aerobic, little expected effect. Plus 8 x 1km runs (aerobic).

Start 3–5g of creatine a day at least 28 days before race day, with no loading phase, and keep taking it through race week.

Does creatine help Hyrox performance?

Creatine has one authorised performance claim in the UK: creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise, with the effect seen at 3g a day. That wording matters for Hyrox, because the race is a mix. Most of your time is spent running and on the ergs, which are aerobic. But several stations are a series of short, maximal efforts: shoving a loaded sled, hauling it back, jumping out of a burpee, driving a wall ball to the target.

The bigger win is probably in training rather than on race day. Hyrox preparation is full of heavy sled sessions, intervals and strength work, all of which are repeated hard efforts. Being able to do a little more quality work in those sessions, week after week, is where creatine can earn its place.

Be realistic about the running. Research on creatine for continuous endurance exercise is mixed, and it is not expected to make your 1km splits faster. If the runs are your weak point, more running will do far more than any supplement.

Which Hyrox stations does creatine help?

Station Work Main demand Creatine relevance
SkiErg 1,000m Aerobic power Low
Sled push 50m Repeated maximal leg drive High
Sled pull 50m Repeated maximal pulls High
Burpee broad jumps 80m Repeated explosive jumps High
Row 1,000m Aerobic power Low
Farmers carry 200m Grip, trunk, strength-endurance Some
Sandbag lunges 100m Leg strength-endurance Some
Wall balls 100 reps Repeated squat-and-throw power High
8 x 1km runs 8km total Aerobic endurance Low

"Relevance" here means how closely the effort matches the repeated short, high-intensity bursts that the creatine research and the authorised claim describe. It is a guide, not a promise of seconds saved.

The water-weight trade-off

Creatine draws water into muscle along with it. With a loading phase of 20g a day, studies often see body weight rise by 1–2kg in the first week. At 3–5g a day with no loading the change is smaller and builds slowly. That water sits inside the muscle rather than under the skin, but you still carry it around the course.

For a race that is 8km of running plus stations, that is a real consideration, which is why we would not load in the month before a Hyrox. Start a daily 3–5g dose early in your training block and let your bodyweight settle long before race day. Our guide to creatine bloating and water weight shows how the two approaches compare.

How to take creatine for Hyrox

  • Dose: 3–5g of creatine monohydrate a day. One 5g serving covers almost every bodyweight; see our creatine dose calculator.
  • Start: at least four weeks before the race. Without loading, it takes about three to four weeks for muscle stores to fill.
  • Every day: rest days included. Missing the odd day does not matter much, because stores fall slowly.
  • Timing: whenever is easiest to remember. Many athletes take it after training or with breakfast.
  • Race week: keep taking it as normal. Do not start anything new, change your dose or load.
  • Race day: your usual dose at your usual time is fine. There is no benefit to an extra race-morning serving, because what matters is the stores you have built.
  • Travelling to a race: pre-measured sachets save you carrying a tub and scoop.

Creatine plus collagen: the full Hyrox protocol

Hyrox loads more than muscle. Eight kilometres of running, 100m of lunges and a heavy sled all put repeated strain on the Achilles, knees and the connective tissue around them. That is where collagen comes in. Studies have looked at collagen peptides taken before training for tendons and connective tissue, with some promising early results, though collagen has no authorised health claims in the UK and no trials have tested collagen and creatine together.

Our Hyrox hub sets out the full collagen and creatine protocol for training, rest and race week. If you want both in one daily habit, a Collagen + Creatine sachet gives you 5g of creatine monohydrate, 10g of hydrolysed collagen and vitamin C, at 44 kcal, mixed with water. It is £59.95 for 30, or £2.00 a sachet.

One honest note for competitive racers: the Collagen + Creatine sachet is not Informed Sport certified. If you compete under anti-doping rules and want batch-tested products, choose an Informed Sport certified creatine. Our 20g liquid collagen shot is Informed Sport certified, if you want to cover the collagen side that way.

Safety

Creatine monohydrate at 3–5g a day is well studied in healthy adults. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a kidney condition or take regular medication, speak to your GP before starting. Creatine can raise creatinine on blood tests, so mention it if you are having bloods taken.

FAQ

Should I take creatine on Hyrox race day?

Take your usual daily dose if that is part of your routine. It will not act within hours; the benefit comes from the muscle stores you built over the previous weeks.

Will creatine slow my runs down?

It can add a little bodyweight, mostly with a loading phase. At 3–5g a day started well before race day, most people's weight changes very little, but if the running is your strength, weigh that against the station benefit and judge it in training.

Should I load creatine before Hyrox?

We would not in the final month. Loading fills stores in about a week but often adds 1–2kg of water weight. A daily 5g dose started four or more weeks out gets you to the same place without it.

Is creatine allowed in Hyrox?

Creatine is not on the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List. If you compete under anti-doping rules, the bigger risk is contamination, which is why batch-tested products exist.

Is creatine worth it for a first Hyrox?

For a first race, consistent training, pacing and practising the stations matter far more. If you already train hard three or more times a week and want an edge in the strength work, creatine is a sensible, inexpensive addition.
