Hydrolysed collagen and collagen peptides are the same thing. Both terms describe collagen that has been broken down by enzymes into short chains of amino acids small enough to be absorbed. "Collagen hydrolysate" and "bioactive collagen peptides" mean the same again. Gelatin is different: it is partially broken-down collagen that still forms a gel, and it is the one you should not confuse with the others.
The supplement industry uses six or seven names for two products, then adds molecular-weight numbers, collagen "types" and sourcing claims on top. This guide decodes every term you will see on a UK collagen label, tells you which form the clinical trials used, and gives you a 30-second label check so you never pay for the wrong one.

- Hydrolysed collagen = collagen peptides = collagen hydrolysate. Fully broken down, dissolves in cold water, does not gel, absorbed as small peptides. This is what the trials used.

What "hydrolysed" means
Collagen in its natural state is a triple helix, a long, tightly wound protein of around 300,000 Daltons that the gut cannot absorb whole. Hydrolysis uses enzymes to cut it into fragments of two to a few dozen amino acids. Those fragments are the "peptides". Once hydrolysed, collagen dissolves in cold liquids, has no gelling ability, and passes into the blood as di- and tri-peptides (particularly those containing hydroxyproline) that can be detected in plasma within an hour or two of drinking it.
Every human trial that reported benefits for skin, joints, tendons, muscle or bone used hydrolysed collagen or collagen peptides. When a label says either, you are looking at the same category of product.

Gelatin is not useless. The Shaw 2017 study that started the "collagen before training" protocol used vitamin C enriched gelatin, and a 2019 follow-up found hydrolysed collagen produced the same rise in collagen synthesis. Gelatin is simply less convenient and a little slower to absorb. For a daily supplement, hydrolysed is the practical choice.
Molecular weight: what the Dalton numbers mean
Brands increasingly print molecular weight on pack: "3,000 Da", "low molecular weight peptides", "nano collagen". The number describes the average size of the fragments after hydrolysis. Here is what the evidence supports:
- Peptides under roughly 5,000 Da are well absorbed. Most commercial hydrolysed collagen sits between 2,000 and 5,000 Da.
- There is no good human evidence that 1,000 Da outperforms 3,000 Da for skin, joints or tendons. The trials that produced results used ordinary hydrolysed collagen in the 2,000 to 5,000 Da range.
- "Marine collagen absorbs 1.5 times better" comes from molecular-weight marketing, not head-to-head human trials. See marine vs bovine collagen.
Treat molecular weight as a sign the product is properly hydrolysed, not as a reason to pay more.
Collagen types on labels: I, II, III, V, X
Collagen "types" describe where the collagen came from and what tissue it forms. Type I is skin, tendon, ligament and bone. Type III sits alongside it in skin, muscle and blood vessels. Type II is cartilage. Bovine hide collagen naturally contains types I and III; marine (fish skin) is type I; chicken sternum is type II. "Multi-collagen" blends listing five types are combining sources, but once hydrolysed, the peptides from any type are very similar and the body does not sort them by type. Undenatured type II collagen (UC-II) is a different product
You will see 40mg capsules of "undenatured" or "native" type II collagen sold for joints. This is not hydrolysed at all and works through an immune-tolerance mechanism in the gut rather than by supplying amino acids. It has its own small evidence base for osteoarthritis. It is not interchangeable with hydrolysed collagen, and 40mg of it does nothing for skin, tendons or muscle.
The 30-second UK label check
- Look for "hydrolysed collagen", "collagen peptides" or "collagen hydrolysate" in the ingredients. Any of the three is right.
- Find the grams per serving. Trials used 2.5g for skin and nails, 5g to 10g for joints, 15g to 20g for muscle and recovery. Under 2.5g is a beauty gummy, not a supplement dose.
- Check the source if it matters to you: bovine (types I and III), marine (type I), porcine (usually gelatin).
- Look for a batch-testing mark such as Informed Sport if you compete or simply want proof of what is in the sachet.
